The Laws of Space |

The theme of this issue, “空间之道The Laws of Space”, serves as a springboard for discourse surrounding the ways in which space is sensed, objectively conceived, and subjectively perceived as a byproduct of personal memories and experiences. While it is ultimately of a subjective nature, the human form limits us to a certain framework under which these perceptions can arise – they are the so-called ‘laws’ of a space – it is the way, essence or 道 of its existence.

The subjective nature of perceiving has thus led us to invite 16 Beijing-based creatives to lend their own understanding of space. Furthermore, the publication’s intent is twofold. First, it archives the multi-sensory curated experience “Perceptions of Home”, which took place in March 2014 in one of Beijing’s Home Inn Motels and featured works by mixed media and performing artist, Chen Xi 陈熹, sound engineer and synthesizer maker, Meng Qi 孟奇, and photographer, Bu Yun Jun 卜云军. Second, it critically dissects how space, informed by subjective perception, is created, experienced, and utilized both practically and metaphysically.

Offering a unique, cross-sectional analysis of the unwritten laws that underlie space within various disciplines, this inaugural 八家BāJiā includes an interview on two-dimensional creative aesthetics with renown Chinese contemporary painter, Yu Hong 喻红; survey on ancient notions of ‘center’ by the Beijing-based, Taiwanese architect, Jenny Chou 周真徵; thesis on the utility of emptiness by the Chinese journalist and author, Wendy Wang 王敏; photographic essay exploring physical and psychological environments in China and America by Los Angelino, Harrison Schaaf; and the space-time occupied by Chinese Yams by sushi chef, Max Levy.

Whether relating to tangible structures or formless states of mind, what are the principles that govern an existence confined to this physical world? bāc-tā-gon invites your curiosity in exploring our contributors’ internalizations and expressions of space.
